Case Study 1: On the Search for High Quality Coaster Board

The Customer:

In late 2018, Fishers was approached by a web-based custom sticker producer in the eastern US. They were looking to expand their product offering into custom coasters but were struggling to find a board that was of good quality and durability, something that would reflect the excellence that their customers were familiar with.

The Challenge:

They had purchased a skid of blank coaster board from a company that also produced custom coasters. While this poses it’s own problems, the main issue was that the quality of the board was poor and the board was delivered in poor condition (damaged and wet). Needless to say, the customer was still on the hunt for a board that aligned with their brand reputation.

The Solution:

After discussions around calipers and sizing, Fishers Paperboard sent the customer a mixed skid for testing. They were able to see what caliper worked best for their custom coasters, and Fishers has been sending them product ever since. Our flexibility allows us to ship from our warehouse or directly from the mill. Fishers ensures that our customers are provided with consistent, quality products and makes the ordering process easy, so that small businesses don’t have to go through the hassle of dealing with a mill direct and ordering by the container load.

The Result:

Fishers has been consistently supplying this customer for over a year and their customers love it. In fact, we had them make custom coasters for our own promotional purposes and they are awesome! In this case, it was by providing flexible order quantities (skid to container load) of consistent, high quality coaster board so that our customer did not have to worry about having a reliable source as they launched this product line.

Case Study 2: Not Large Enough to Buy From a Mill

The Customer:

Fishers loves dealing with our local market and is always thrilled when we can offer custom solutions to our customers. We were approached by an existing customer who was looking to get into custom coasters. They had a strong demand for it already but were just reselling custom coasters that they would order online through one of the large e-commerce promotional distributors.

The Challenge:

Ordering online through a large promotional distributor meant that our customer (and in turn, his customers) were limited in terms of what they could order (size, board quality, quantities and turn around time). As they saw this area of the business growing, they wanted to take this control back into their own hands and be able to produce custom coasters in-house.

The Solution:

Fishers worked with our customer to determine what their specific requirements would be – what size and caliper would work best with their presses. We custom cut the sheets to 20 x 30” to alleviate some production time on our customer’s end, meaning that we sent over press ready batches of sheets. We were able to come up with a stocking agreement to ensure a short lead time, and Fishers arranges all shipping so there are no delays there. That means that our customer is now able to offer next business day service for small batch custom coasters, a drastic improvement from his limited options prior.

The Result:

Our customer is now able to design and print whatever they like with low minimums to their customers. They can avoid the hassle of conforming to an e-commerce distributor’s format and are able to ensure a rapid turnaround, which is often required for special events.
